Welfare and Education

The House of Representatives believes that families on Welfare should be tied to Welfare attendance in
school. What exactly is Welfare? Welfare is when the government will provide financial benefits to those
who see themselves unable to provide for their children and their families. On the other hand, some
people believe that the financial benefits should be earned or have a stipulation in some kind of way. For
example, the stipulation people want to be able to monitor Welfare children’s attendance at school. In
doing so, the stipulation people think this will minimize the likeliness of those children continuing the
cycle of being on Welfare when they become adults. The children will be present for class, become further
knowledgeable about college, the importance of college, and this will likely minimize the child being on
Welfare as an adult.

In my opinion, the stipulation people have a good point in wanting to make the Welfare families earn and
work for the financial benefits. But, lets take it a step further and require the parents to meet with the
students teacher periodically and make sure the teacher is involved in the students academics. Of course
we want to stop the cycle of Welfare, but how can we educate the adult on getting off of Welfare. How
can we put stipulations on the adult as well. We need to make the adult accountable; once the child sees
the adult trying to make a difference that will guide the child in a positive direction as well. It can’t be
the old say “Do as I say, but not as I do” there has to be accountability full circle.

Stiff Teacher Requirements

The article I read was “Passing Rate Declines by 20% as State Uses New Certification Exams for
Teachers” This article was about New York noticing a significant decrease in potential teachers not
passing the certification exams. In the picture was a young lady by the name of Jaleesa Pimentel.
Jaleesa Pimentel had to retake one of the four new exams in order to teach in New York. Potential
teachers without their certification are not allowed to teach in public schools. The old system the
teachers would have to pass three exams, but now they must pass four. The new and latest that has
been added to the fleet of other three exams is the Teacher Performance Assessment. The Teacher
Performance Assessment requires the teacher to submit a video of the potential teacher teaching.
Passing rate is 81% The other exams students struggle the most with is reading and argumentative
writing

In my opinion, four exams is pretty excessive. It would be better if New York could get the tests into
two. Prairie View A & M University has two exams Content (do you know the material) and PPR
(how well can you teach the material). Plain and Simple. I just do not get why would New York
want to drag their potential students through such a grueling process of getting a degree. I would
be drained after the third test. Then, you have you amp yourself up for the fourth test. Ridiculous.
My advice to anyone in New York wanting to be a teacher find a local state, like Texas, transfer your
credits, get your degree, and go back home to New York and teach. I believe the state has to honor
your degree even-though it was acquired out of state.

Review of “What to Expect in Fourth Grade”

Fourth grade is a year in which the student is beginning to explore deeper into
subjects. The student is no longer writing choppy phrases, and sentence structure
is beginning to blossom into expressive understandable statements. The student
is able to write an essay using numerous of different ideas. The student is getting
prepared for middle school level writing.

Also, mathematics is beginning to get more intuitive and complex. The students
will learn place values, addition, multiplication, division and measurement.
Fractions and decimals will be a large component of the mathematical teachings
this year. The parent can begin challenging the student by asking the student to
calculate percentages and use food to help with fractions. For example, pizza
can be divided into twelve slices if you divide each slice in half how many slices
will you have in the end. Simple problems like the pizza problem will help the
child understand that math is all around them. Also, math can be fun and eatable
too!

Even though middle school is a year away, the teachers begin to prepare the
students for the more intense and difficult tasks expected of a middle school
student. I agree the teachers and the curricula is structured to guide the student
towards success in middle school. It is helpful for the student to already have a
handle on the expectations in the classroom. I think the curricula is structured
to make sure the student will not be lost when they move onto the next grade
 level.

Fourth grade is a good year, like any other year, for the parents to get involved
with their students school work, teachers, and know what is to be expected of
your child in the classroom setting. The parent can then develop tips and tricks
to help the student blossom even further in their educational endeavors.

Fun Brain Review

Fun Brain Review

Funbrain.com is an educational website that has numerous games and activities for children to engage in.
The website is full of color and exciting games that will interest children.

For starters, the benefits of Funbrain.com is the unlimited gaming and activities children are able to
engage in. For example, there are sections at the top of the page labeled
math arcade, reading, fun arcade, playground and all games. By clicking on one of the tabs, math arcade,
there are a sea full of games children are able to participate in. This website definitely gives children an opportunity to continue learning but in a fun way. Not all
homework that is assigned by teachers from school is fun. Funbrain.com will give the child a chance to learn in there own way and pick what they want to do instead of being told which one to do.

On the other hand, funbrain.com has a chance to also improve their website as well. On this site
there should be a way for parents to log in after their child has completed games. The parent will have
an opportunity to see where their child’s strengths are, as well as, weaknesses. Also there should be a
time limit on each game the child can play. The limit will help the child to explore other games on the
website, not just the easy ones they know to love.

Funbrain.com has pros and cons, but overall their website is an outlet for children in an educational way.
Funbrain.com has mastered the fun and learning concept.

Dealing with paperwork and dealines related Education Major

Firstly, I organize my class assignments in order of when they are due. For instance, this Wednesday, October 29, 2014 I have four classes; listed below are my assignments due.
1.      Structure of Numbers
·         Homework 6.2-6.4
·         Online Quiz Due: October 28
2.      Math Modeling Applications
·         Review Critique Presentations
3.      Science Lab
·         Lab is Due
4.      Developmental Reading
·         Article Critique #3 Due
·         Article Critique #4 Due
·         Chapter 9 Group Presentation
In order to remain on top of my classes, I space out the work load amongst the week. I work on the homework for structure in between taking breaks from writing Article Critique #3 and #4. Once I get bored with math and writing critiques, I work on my group presentation for reading. Working on the presentation for reading helps me to take a break from the serious work (Writing Critiques & Math Homework). Working on the presentation lets me be creative and have fun. Once I complete the Chapter nine presentation, I go back to the serious work and finish the rest of my online homework and Critique #3 and #4. By this time the assignments for Developmental Reading are complete. For structure I complete the five question online quiz before taking a nap. When I wake up from my nap, I review my lab and fill in the missing information that my group and I missed. For Math Modeling Applications I go over Critique and brainstorm new ways to improve my presentation. All of these tasks and assignments are completed Monday, October 27, 2014 prior to Wednesday October 29, 2014. Tuesday October 28, 2014 is a day to make sure I have all assignments printed, whole punched, and in my binder. I have an opportunity to edit the critiques one last time as well.

Analysis of Education Courses

Four Years of Discipline

My current focus at Prairie View A & M University is Education 4-8, Generalist. Overall my degree plan has an assortment of classes. I have completed my pre-requisite courses on the front of my degree plan. For example, my English, arts, history, and government are all completed. Currently I am in the process of trying to finish the back of my degree plan, which consists of Interdisciplinary courses and CUIN courses. For example, reading, personal health, and CUIN courses are the courses that I have left to finish.

The CUIN courses are the courses that are geared towards student teaching in the classroom. In order to be eligible to take CUIN courses, the student must be accepted into the Education Program at Prairie View A & M University. I was accepted into the education program summer of 2014. I will begin my CUIN courses fall 2015. I am finishing up my last couple interdisciplinary courses prior to beginning CUIN courses.

Overall, the degree takes time just like any other degree. A student must plan and have a goal of projected graduation. By having a goal, it keeps the student focused on what is important, graduating and teaching.

Review of PVAMU Teachers, Staff & Courses

Reviews of Teachers and Staff in Your Department

Currently I am in the education department at Prairie View A & M University. Thus far, I have had the pleasure of having wonderful Education Major focused teachers. For example, Dr. Bliss, a reading professor, is one of the most caring teachers I have had in reading. Dr. Bliss makes a person want to read, and participate in class. She has different projects that help students focus on their educational concentration (EC-6, 4-8, Generalist, and SPED). Another professor that I am currently enjoying is Mrs. Wells, a reading professor at Prairie View A & M University. She really connects the real world of teaching, so we gain more knowledge prior to stepping into the real world (elementary school & middle school environment).

Review of Courses Required by Major

As previously stated, my focus is 4-8, Generalist. The courses required by my major are an assortment of courses. In order to be considered a generalist, one must be well rounded in every subject possible: math, science, English, and History. Along with other courses to maintain well roundness, my course load gives me a sample of every subject I could possibly teach.

What I Have Learned and What I Wish to Improve

Getting Organized
What I Have Learned
This semester has been a very challenging one. I have been challenged the most in my mathematics classes. Mathematics has not been a tough subject for me to grasp the concept, but when you mix upper level mathematics or (four thousand levels) with a lower level or (three thousand levels) it can be difficult to get the two subject matters confused or mixed up, especially with them being so similar. Overall, I have learned to remain calm and patient with these challenging courses. Keeping my composure, and not becoming overwhelmed with assignments, has taught me I can overcome anything.

What I Wish to Improve

I wish to learn more about organizing my classes. The binder method with dividers does not work for me at all. I tried it, and I never keep up with the binder or keep it organized. Also, I need to figure a way to organize my syllabi at the beginning of the semester. As the semester becomes more hectic, it becomes more difficulty to constantly look at each syllabus every day.

Different Social Media Techniques Explored

Social Media Techniques

Twitter
The social media techniques that I have explored thus far are Twitter and Blogger. The twitter project that is required for my Professional Writing course is interesting. I have learned that twitter is not necessarily used for finding out the latest drama. Twitter can be used in a more social networking kind of way. By following important news anchors and future graduate schools, I am able to remain informed of the new updates and deadlines coming up. Of course Twitter should not be my only resource for finding out information. But, being taught how to use Twitter as a professional feature with all of the required tweets , follows, and URL posts has made me view Twitter as a tool not just a social media.

Blogger
Blogger is the next social media tool that I am currently exploring. Thus far, it is a pretty neat way to get your thoughts out in a professional manner. Blogging helps to remove those cluttering thoughts from the mind, and put those thoughts down on a Blog.
