Fourth grade is a year in which the student is beginning to explore deeper into
subjects. The student is no longer writing choppy phrases, and sentence structure
is beginning to blossom into expressive understandable statements. The student
is able to write an essay using numerous of different ideas. The student is getting
prepared for middle school level writing.
Also, mathematics is beginning to get more intuitive and complex. The students
will learn place values, addition, multiplication, division and measurement.
Fractions and decimals will be a large component of the mathematical teachings
this year. The parent can begin challenging the student by asking the student to
calculate percentages and use food to help with fractions. For example, pizza
can be divided into twelve slices if you divide each slice in half how many slices
will you have in the end. Simple problems like the pizza problem will help the
child understand that math is all around them. Also, math can be fun and eatable
too!
Even though middle school is a year away, the teachers begin to prepare the
students for the more intense and difficult tasks expected of a middle school
student. I agree the teachers and the curricula is structured to guide the student
towards success in middle school. It is helpful for the student to already have a
handle on the expectations in the classroom. I think the curricula is structured
to make sure the student will not be lost when they move onto the next grade
level.
Fourth grade is a good year, like any other year, for the parents to get involved
with their students school work, teachers, and know what is to be expected of
your child in the classroom setting. The parent can then develop tips and tricks
to help the student blossom even further in their educational endeavors.
